Fuzzy Music

I was planning on coloring this guy in, but I just had my eyes dilated (for the first time!), so I don't think there'll be any drawing or coloring in going on in the next couple of hours. I think about all I can handle right now is watching TV. Yay for NBC Thursday!

This drawing is another Sean assignment, the prompt being "fuzzy music."

Behold a robot doodle, enhanced with a little bit o' watercolor.

The happy artist

Today's post is the result of another Sean assignment. I was instructed to draw "a happy child artist."

Theater of the Mind

This week's Illustration Friday word was "theater" so I drew a literal-ish picture of "theater of the mind" in pencil and watercolor. This reminds me a bit of those puzzle books I used to play with when I was little that would have things like:

EGGS
EASY

and you'd have to indentify the common phrase (eggs over easy).

Pilot Benjamin

I did this one a little while ago in Illustrator while putting together little to-be-animated pieces of my portfolio website (which isn't up yet). I named this little character Pilot Benjamin, in honor of my friend Lily's uh-dorable little Boo. Click here to check out her blog and see the cuteness for yourself!

Ta Prohm, Cambodia

A year ago, Sean and I were flitting about Southeast Asia on our honeymoon. This is, sadly, the only drawing that I did on the trip. We got up early enough to beat the crowds and spent some time at the temple called Ta Prohm, which was probably my favorite of the ones we saw. It's unfinished because it started raining and we had to put our paper away.

Fun fact: much of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was filmed at this temple. Best part of the movie.

Toddler vs. Rubik's Cube - Take 2

Here's a colored vector version of the sketch I uploaded the other day (done in Illustrator).

Oops! I just noticed that one of the cubes couldn't be colored the way it is in the drawing. I'll fix it but I'm not going to upload the corrected version :).

Impossibility

Impossibility is this week's inspiration word on the fun site Illustration Friday. Check it out if you haven't seen it before! While my picture isn't based on it, red balloons always make me think of the wonderful movie The Red Balloon. The drawing isn't really finished, but I thought it would be nice to put up something colorful.

I was initially thinking of possibly doing something along these lines for Sara Bareilles' poster contest. I drew this up in Painter X.

Shorpy face

I love the website Shorpy.com, which has many many interesting old photos, all scanned at very high resolution. This sketch was taken from a Shorpy photo.

Toddler vs. Rubik's Cube

Sometimes I ask Sean to give me mini drawing assignments. This is "a toddler trying to solve a Rubik's cube." I might paint a more finished version of it at some point.

Frank, the dinosaur (or giant lizard?)

This is Frank. He's probably plotting something mildly sinister, but I'm not sure what.

More yumminess

Behold a lovely (vegan) parfait! Perfect for a spring evening. This one was also done with Prismacolor pencils. I actually did a little digital manipulation in putting it on a white background (the paper was smudgy), but otherwise it's all by hand.

Vegan Boston Cream Cupcake

If you know me at all, you likely know that I am obsessed with making and eating vegan cupcakes. (Please get your hands on a copy of Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World if you don't own it already!)

This is a drawing based on a photo from a magazine. I did it with Prismacolor pencils while listening to the Fresh Air podcast (good interviews with Colin Hanks and Leonard Cohen).

Late post today! Oops.

The Edge

Today's creation is a pencil sketch of David Evans, better known as The Edge (more guitar inspiration!). I based this one on an oldish photo from Rolling Stone.

I just did a quick search on him and learned that the man wore his signature beanie to his own wedding! If that's not dedication to one's image, I don't know what is.

For more fun reading on weddings and guitar, check out my friend Jenn's blog, A Bride's Brain.

William, the hippo who lives at the Met

This is a little cartoon inspired by William, the blue hippopotamus sculpture from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. I imagine him as being generally friendly by nature but having become cranky and despondent after standing in his display box for all these years.

Another faces in places painting

In honor of the fact that I'm learning to play the guitar (with Jenn!), today's post is another painting based on faces in places. This one is a pretty loose interpretation. He's trying to smile but he doesn't like being photographed, so it's coming off as more of a grimace. Click here to see the original photo and here to see the blog.

Happy Anniversary!

In honor of our first wedding anniversary, today's post is a bear that I sewed and gave to Sean a few years ago on the occasion of our second year of dating. He's made from found fabric and (as he has no sleeves) wears his heart on his chest.

My handwriting

Today’s creation is a font I made (for free) that resembles my own handwriting! It only took a few minutes.

You can do it too if you have a printer, a scanner, and the ability to follow directions. Just go to yourfonts.com. I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out! If you create one, send it on to me if you feel like sharing :).

Hubby and me

When Sean and I were trying to come up with design ideas for our wedding announcements last year, I played around in Illustrator with a stylized image of the two of us that we never ended up using. I just revisited it last night and made some changes to polish it up a little bit.

Fergus says hello

Welcome! I'm planning to post new creations daily. These may take the shape of little crocheted figures, pencil sketches, watercolor drawings, or perhaps even what I've made for dinner.

Today's creation is Fergus, my little alien buddy. I began him while watching Ping Pong Playa and sewed him together and added his face during two episodes of 24 and one episode of The Simpsons. He's made of vegan yarn (acrylic, in this case) and stuffed with polyfil. The fangs look pretty fierce, but he's a softie at heart.
